Fighting for coal miner rights earns Demuzio the UMWA support

CARLINVILLE — Senator Deanna Demuzio has been endorsed by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) and the Illinois Coal Miners Political Action Committee (COMPAC) in her re-election campaign for Illinois Senate in the 49th District.

“Senator Demuzio has always stood up for working families, especially the coal miners of Illinois,” said Steve Earle, UMWA International District 12 Vice-President. “Coal mining families across the state are very fortunate to have a strong supporter like the Senator looking out for their best interests in the State Senate.”

“Being raised in one of the major coal mining communities in Illinois demonstrated to me the importance of upholding and protecting the rights of coal miners,” said Senator Demuzio. “I will continue to work hard to make sure our coal miners are able to achieve a quality standard of living and that the pensions our retirees worked for many years to earn, remain safe.”

“When we make a promise to hard working coal mining families giving them a right to security in their retirement, we have to fight for that promise to be honored,” added Demuzio.

According to the UMWA website, the organization represents approximately 105,000 active and retired coal miners, mine construction workers, public service employees, health care workers and manufacturing workers throughout the United States and Canada.  The UMWA represents more coal miners than any other union in the world.
