Demuzio and other downstate candidates did not seek Chicago Tribune endorsement received by McCann
CARLINVILLE — Senator Deanna Demuzio said she didn’t think it was even necessary to fill out a questionnaire sent to her several months ago by the Chicago Tribune. Filling out the questionnaire meant that she was interested in obtaining the endorsement of a newspaper hundreds of miles from her district. Senator Demuzio found no reason to solicit their support. Sam McCann felt differently – he sought and received the backing of the Chicago newspaper.
“I don’t read the Chicago Tribune and certainly don’t identify with the issues the paper writes about on a daily basis,” said Demuzio. “The issues that I identify with come out of newspapers from my district based in Hardin, Taylorville, Staunton, Jacksonville, Hillsboro, Pittsfield, Carrollton, and the many other communities across the 11 counties I represent – not a paper that only works to serve big city interests almost 300 miles north of us.”
Numerous times throughout the course of the campaign, Sam McCann has claimed that Senator Demuzio is more interested in looking out for Chicago than her own district, even claiming on a radio interview that “she takes her cues from the Chicago Machine.”
“It seems to me that Mr. McCann has it backwards,” added Demuzio. “While I am out knocking on doors and receiving support from groups that represent our local interests like the NRA, Citizens for Life, Farm Bureau Activator, ABATE, teacher organizations, and the labor community, Sam McCann is asking for and receiving endorsements like the Chicago Tribune.”
“Mr. McCann keeps claiming that I'm part of the ‘Chicago Machine’ but in seeking the endorsement of the city’s largest paper, it’s clear to me that he’s out of touch with Central Illinois," said Demuzio. "The only machines I'm concerned about are the ones our farmers have in the fields and our businesses have in local factories that continue to put people to work."
Senator Demuzio joined many other downstate candidates in not seeking the endorsement of the Chicago Tribune – Republican Senators Dale Righter, Dave Luechtefeld, and Kyle McCarter; Democrat Senator Michael Frerichs and candidates Josh Weger and Jeremy Walker.
